Best Digital Inclusion Impact: DIAA 2015 Nominees Brief
Digital Impact Awards Africa (DIAA) 2015 Best Digital Inclusion Impact category looks at companies that have made it possible for individuals and groups to access and use information and communication technologies. Digital inclusion is achievable with affordable access and usage of digital technologies by citizens. The nominees for this category are organizations that have made great effort to improve affordable access to ICTs. These are:
Startimes added the word affordability to Digital Television in Africa. Right from their startup packages to monthly fees, Startimes can be afforded by some members of society to whom digital television was just a dream. As Africa is in the phase of Digital Switchover and hence permanent digital migration, Startimes is offering affordable tools to enable the continuity of optimal television broadcasting.
With Samsung, people are able to access a wide range of affordable phones. The Samsung Galaxy series of phones and tabs as well as a whole range of laptops and other gadgets at affordable prices has seen Samsung bring ICT access to many people across Africa.
Being the pioneer Digital Satelite TV Service provider in Africa, Multichoice brought both quality TV Signal and entertainment to the homes of many Africans. This impact continues, especially with their DSTV, which has a wide range of Supersport Channels that keep sports fanatics on their toes. Multichoice also introduced GoTV, which is a lot more affordable. As the spectrum gets freed up as a result of the switchover, Multichoice offers a whole range of TV products including mobile TV that comes in handy for people that are mostly on the road. Not forgetting MultiChoice’s Box Office a highly innovative content distribution innovation.
Offering affordable devices, fast, reliable internet connectivity and engaging in digital corporate social responsibility such as the MTN Mobile App Challenge, MTN has taken a deep dive with efforts to improve digital inclusion. It is on top of the MTN quality data services that some social products for E-Health and E-Learning will be able to flourish. MTN also brings to market affordable data packages such as MTN Social Bundles ‘WFT’. With recent launch of LTE across the country, MTN continues to be a key player in Digital Inclusion across Africa.
Huawei is credited for affordable modems, classy handsets, a wide range of smartphones, tabs and a whole lot of other digital solutions. Over the last year, Huawei mobile has brought more choice of devices on market. Additionally Huawei provides backbone technologies for internet and other services that are accessed through telecom providers.
Airtel is one of the telecoms to first innovate with mobile apps bringing to us Airtel Money and Airtel care mobile apps. The self-branded *Smartphone network* has over the last year made great effort to improve access to affordable smartphone and internet services. Bringing to market smart devices such s Airtel Red. Following their Switchon campaign in 2014, Airtel 2015 innovation of Tugabane; a Data shared account service, the first of this kind on the market, is another highlight of Airtel contribution to digital inclusion. Promoting digital content with platforms such us Airtel Football has also added kudos to Airtel efforts in digital space.
