Uganda Champions Space-Driven Digital Transformation at NewSpace Africa 2025

Uganda’s growing commitment to leveraging space science for development took center stage at the NewSpace Africa Conference 2025, held from April 21–24 in Cairo, Egypt. Hosted by the Egyptian Space Agency in partnership with the African Space Agency, the conference brought together stakeholders from across the continent to discuss the future of Africa’s space economy.

Delivering a keynote address titled “Uganda’s National Space Program and Her Vision for Africa”, Uganda’s Minister of State for ICT, Hon. Joyce Juliet Nabbosa Sebugwawo, reaffirmed Uganda’s bold ambition to use space technology as a driver for digital transformation and sustainable development—both within Uganda and across Africa. She emphasized that Uganda’s space program is not only a national priority but also a critical part of a continental vision for progress.

In her address, Hon. Sebugwawo outlined how Uganda’s space ambitions are closely tied to the country’s Digital Transformation Roadmap, pointing to three core areas where space innovation is already having an impact. First, she highlighted the role of digital infrastructure, noting that satellite technologies are being used to extend connectivity to underserved regions. Second, she emphasized Uganda’s investment in digital literacy and skilling, especially through STEM and space education to cultivate a generation of homegrown talent. Finally, she pointed to the growing use of space-based data and insights to tackle real-world challenges in agriculture, environmental monitoring, and disaster preparedness.

Uganda’s presence at the conference was further bolstered by key technical voices. Dr. Doreen Agaba, Technical Lead of the Department of Aeronautics and Space Science under the STI Secretariat, contributed to a high-level panel discussion, sharing insights on Uganda’s evolving space strategy and the importance of policy frameworks and regional cooperation. Meanwhile, Ambrose Ruyooka, Head of the Department of Research and Development, engaged in technical sessions focused on the intersections of space science with emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), digital skilling, and educational technology (EdTech).

The conference also featured a vibrant exhibition, with global space industry leaders showcasing a wide array of technologies—from satellite systems and aerospace manufacturing to simulation tools and data platforms. Hon. Sebugwawo toured the exhibition booths, engaging with innovators and exploring potential partnerships to strengthen Uganda’s space ecosystem.

Throughout her engagements, the Minister stressed that Uganda’s journey into space is about more than reaching the stars. It is about using space-enabled solutions to transform lives on the ground—improving livelihoods, building resilience, and driving inclusive growth. Her message was clear: space innovation is a critical tool for delivering on Africa’s development agenda.

Uganda’s participation in NewSpace Africa 2025 reflects its broader vision of becoming a regional leader in space science, backed by strong political will, strategic partnerships, and a commitment to inclusive innovation. As the country continues to build its space capacity, it is also building a brighter future for its people—and for Africa as a whole.
